Reading note

Plagioclimax

  • An interruption of ecosystem from reaching its full climatic climax by humans
  • Most of the trees are burnt down cause a lot of carbon dioxide to go back to atmosphere which is the main reason of Global warming right now.
  • In every year there will be a lot of deforestation happen all around the world.

Darwin's Finches Jinny

Darwin's Finches

Introduction

Charles Darwin
=Naturalist
-Father of evolutionalist theory
-Survival of fittest

What is Darwin's Finches
-Group made up of 13 species of passerine birds
-They were no known as Darwin's Finches until 1936 ,popularized by ornithologist

What is Darwin's Finches
-Darwin's finches is group made up of 13 species of passerine birds

History
-All of Darwin's Finches evolved from one ancestral species
-The ancestral species arrived South American mainland around 2 or 3 million years ago

In late December of 1831
-Darwin and his HMS Bragle went on voyage around South America
-His aim was to observer and collect samples of loval flora and fauna

=At the Galapagos Islands, off the coast of Ecuador was where his finding began

Variety
-There were variations of the finches from island to island
-Their beaks amde ot difficult to differentiate them

-Ground finch
-Woodpecker finch has evolved a bust brak to drill holes in tree and eat beetle larvaes
-Cactus finch has longer sharp pointed beaks to feed on cactuses
Tree finches

They mostly feed on insects
Warbler finch has a very fine needle-like beak to picking off insects

Causation
-This phenomenon is called the character displacement
-Animals experience evolutionary change to minimize competition with the food
-The path of a weather system "El Nino" affected the islands
-Sometimes extreamely hot and dry and sometimes rainy for the whole month
-This caused the shortage of seeds on the island -> increase in competition
-The small beaked birds becamse weak to survive -> by the end of the drought period, their beak depth was increased by 1 mm
-Then the finches began to spread around in new habitats and specialise on different ways of feeding

The Lorax

-genre
Children Literature (Book)
Cartoon Animation ,Comedy ,Short Film
-Director /author
Directors = Kyle Balda, Chris Renaud
Author = Dr.Seuss
-Story background
This film is based on the book "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss.

In the town of Thneedville, everything is plastic and manufactured... and the people like it that way. But when Ted's friend Audrey says she'd like to see a real tree one day, Ted goes on a quest to find one in order to win her love.

Ted ventures outside the walls of Thneedville in search of The Once-ler, supposedly the only individual who knows how to find a tree. Ted finds the old hermit who reluctantly tells the tale of how he was responsible for all of the trees being cut down. The Once-ler also tells Ted about how the magical representative of the trees named The Lorax tried to stop him to no avail.

But while Ted hears the story of the trees, the evil head of the O'Hare Company conspires to keep him from bringing them back.

-Purpose/Movement
If you can get past the whole political thing, "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" is a fun movie for both kids and adults. Grown-ups will like seeing their beloved childhood book brought to the big screen in 3D while kids will enjoy the antics of the Lorax and the bears. Plus it's a good message about conserving natural resources and taking care of the environment. To support and time materialism

Task 1 Systems & Models
• Provide a summary of “The Lorax”
From the beginning there’s a town called Thneed Town .Its a city that has no real trees at all ,only trees that come out from the factory produce lights. And for the clean air will be selling in the form of a tank by O’Hare organization.
Ted the main character in the story has a crush on Audrey a girl who desires to see the real trees coming out on the dirt again ,and she said that if someone could get her one she will marry that man ,which is best inspiration for Ted to seek for an alive tree again. His grandmother gave him a clue that there is a man called Once-ler who knows what happened to all the trees but he lives outside the town cause Ted to go on the adventure to find him. Once-ler said that he’s the cause of the extinction of the trees ,go back to a long time ago . He found a place where there are so many wild animals a forest full of green colour .He planned to cut the trees down to make his product and sell off to people in the city. He started chopping down a tree ,so here comes the guardian of the forest The Lorax. The Lorax resist Oncerler’s plan with his best eventually they made a deal that Onceler is not going to cut down anymore trees and Lorax will let him live in the forest. But his product called thneed became really popular that so many people come to buy it at his house. And then his family visit him and congratulate with success .

Define systems and models
System is when things come together and work together become a relationship.
Models is the thing that work along with system it visualized the system
Identify and State different systems you observed in the movie “The Lorax” (in the order of smaller to
larger systems)
Ted’s house is open-system
Thneed town is open-system (cause Ted still could get out)
The once-ler’s house is isolated system
Explain and Describe how each system you mentioned works
  • Ted’s house is open-system
    • Because people still can get in and out freely
  • Thneed town is open-system
    • Because the town is affected by the environment outside make people have to buy fresh air. But its not a closed system because Ted which is a matter still could get out of the town and get back in.
  • The once-ler’s house is closed system
    • No-one can get in or out of his house and he himself doesn't come out ,only things that's in and out of his house all the time is the air ,so its closed system.

Suggest the possibilities of any small systems within bigger systems
Thneed town system within the outside world system
People system within the Thneed town system

Suggest how “The Lorax” represents the concept of systems thinking
In the story in there are so many kinds of system ,small system in a bigger ones .

Owls

Owls are kind of bird animal that live on the tree .

Species of Owls
It has been widely

What is Logger?
-Loggers are the people who cut the tree out from the forest
-They cut the tree for the company
-carpenter
-paper factory
-Furniture factory

Effect of Loggers to Owls
-Destroy the environment of owls
-Food (Such as insects, worms ,spiders ,lizards and small birds

Visual Presentation

Positive Feedback

Closed System (Vivian,Mind and James )

Closed System (when the surrounding affect with the system)

What is closed system ?

An isolated system that has no interraction withj the surrounding

Example

Closed pot because its the energy inside just cycling themselves inside it.

Opened System (Angel,Nat and James)

Open System

What is Open System

Its a system that interact with other systems or the environment by exchanging energy and matter with its surrounding

Boiling soupin an opened saucepand - transfer of energy, the soup receive the energy from the air outside causing evaporation

Water Cycle

The sun give energy to the water by heating it up. once the water receive the heat, it turns into steam and flow in the air

Isolated System (Tee,Jinny,Kim)

Isolated - a system which none of the matter or energy intergeres with. These system cannot be found naturally.

Example is Universe itself where the surround  may change but the boundaries of the system cannot be changed

In the closed system an energy can be changed but not the matter . For the isolated system both energy and matter cannot be changed at all

Negative Feedback (Far, New,Mugi)

What is negative feedback

-Its a reaction to a system which causes decrease in a function in order to maintain equailibrium
-It works by reducing theeffect of one system

Example 1

1:The higher the body temperature, the more person sweats
2:The more a person swears, the lower will be body temperature
3:In this system, high body temperature causes sweating, but sweating in turn causes body temperature lower down

Flow and Storage (Pleng,Jihyun,Kan)

Explanation from textbook

Flow:movement through a system in the form of inputs and outputs. Can be either tranfers or transformations

Storage: The stock or reservoir of energy and matter in a system

What is flow and storage?
Flow (inout and outputs) and storage(matter of energy or stock) is energy and matter flow through and stored in our ecosystem

LoveCanal

At Niangara

What Happened ?

After world war 2 love canal become a plave to dump toxic waste

The name of the toxic company was called the Hooker Company

On 1953 the Hooker Comapny sell to a school the land for 1 dollar

The Hooker Company warn the school what's under the ground

Few years later the toxic waste leak out from the landfill(place where we dump trashes)

How did the people find out ?

When the children are outside playing, they came back with burns on the bodies.

Health Problems

Birth Defect: Enlarged head ,hand and legs

Cancer

On August 2, 1978 The new york state commissioner of Health was telling pregnant women and children under 2 years old to leave Love Canal immediately

People start to protest to let the government get them out of the Love Canal

Moving Out

The government  agree to buy the house from the people in Love Canal

Spend 7 million dollars

Some people choose to stay(safe area)

Building fences

The government build a fence around the danger zone

Reopned

Restore Love Canal in June 4 1980

But they didn't take the toxic waste out

Most of the toxic waste area was reburied

The houses were far away from where toxics were leaking

Tee's Presentation

What is DDT?
- the chemical name is Dichloro - Diphenyl - Trichloroethane
- this chemical helped to stop malaria by killing the mosquitoes and insect

DDT that dissolve in fat can become more concentrated as they move up an aquatic food chain, the process called “Bioaccumulation’

DDT was found by chemist called Zeidler in 1874

After DDT has been sell out in the public, it is widely used and most people knew it as a good ting for getting rid of pesticides.

How DDT kill?
- it disrupts the work of cell and affects the plasma membrane
- plasma membrane separates a cell from the inside to its outside, this allows substances to enter and leave the cells —> made of lipid/fats

DDT is fat soluble so it dissolve into plasma membrane. In the same time, opens up the membrane causing the cell to leak.
Potassium ions and sodium ions slip through the membrane.

When the pesticides enters water, algae and bacteria take in the position. SO somehow when DT is sprayed into the water fish will eat it.
Smaller fish are very sensitive to DDT

The food chain are still not totally free of DDT
The pesticides breaks down very slowly in the environment. DDT is still legal in some countries, where it is used in large quantities.
