Old Traditions Resulting in Overhunting

Serow  (Capricornis sumatraensis)

 Serow is one of the wildlife animal that is under the protection of Thailand government because it is close to an extinction ,but some people still trying to hunt it because of some belief. 

Other than their habitats being destroyed ,Serow are being hunted because it was believed that the animals oil can be used in the treatment of wounds, injuries from falls or wounds from being shot or heal broken bones which is not true at all .Each one of the Serow can make a lot of benefit for the entrepreneurs by boiling the heads and bones of the Serow with coconut oils and then put in the bottles 100 - 150 cc which is around 10 baht per bottle .

Other than hunting , destroying the habitats and invasion to change to agricultural areas. So in many areas Serow were driven to live on the high mountains , especially limestone mountains.In addition, the destruction of habitat limestone mountain Serow often come down to find the water and food in the lower area which will be easier for the hunters to hunt them .Because of this Serow population are decreasing greatly . And, the explosion of the mountains to the production of cement and crushed stone production. Destroying resident safety of Serow directly.
